
Olympic hockey player whose last appearance with the national team was in 2019, has retired, according to USA Hockey. “Someone once told me that in the summer you work on your game, and in the winter you perfect it.Gigi Marvin, a three-time U.S. By this she means shooting pucks during the summer, working out to improve strength and endurance, and practicing stick handling. However, for those who really want it, they must do the little things. She says that getting on the ice as much as possible is the most important thing. Gigi was kind enough to provide advice for the aspiring young hockey players out there. Gigi says her dad’s guidance has helped mould her hockey career, as well as who she is as a person. She says he has always looked on as both a parent and a neutral observer, and always knew when to give her praise and when to offer constructive criticism. Beyond the “chalk talk” of hockey though, Gigi says her dad has a special ability to watch her play from two points of view. She says he has been a coach for over thirty years, and his vast knowledge of the game helped her improve over the years. What stands out in Gigi’s mind about the experience is the wave of emotion she felt playing for the United States in front of her home town, at the arena where it all began.Īsked who has had the greatest influence on her playing career, Gigi credits her dad, Mike Marvin. In preparation for the 2007 World Championships, Team USA held an exhibition contest against Team Sweden at The Gardens. Her most memorable hockey moment to date took place with the national team, in Warroad. Within two years of moving on from Selects, Gigi was chosen to play for Team USA, and has since then represented her country in several tournaments around the world. However, the chance to take part in the program became too great an opportunity to pass up, ending Gigi’s days of playing at Selects.

At first, Gigi planned to skip the tryouts and play at Selects, because she loved the tournament so much. She was told that National Development Program tryouts were being held at the same time as the Selects Tournament.

Amazingly, Gigi met her current roommate and fellow member of the Gopher women’s hockey team, Michelle Maunu, while playing for the North team at Minnesota Selects.Ī scheduling conflict put an abrupt finish to Gigi’s Selects career. Gigi also added that she and Holly Roberts became good friends Holly played with her for two years in high school and now plays for St. She became extremely close with Tawni Mattila, who is now a forward at Minnesota Duluth. Over the years participating in the festival Gigi made several friendships with teammates that still last today. She represented the North squad for seven years, from 1997 to 2003. Gigi excelled on the ice from a young age, and her abilities landed her the opportunity to play in the annual Minnesota Selects Hockey Festival. “It’s unbelievable how much you learn and how many tricks, moves, and dekes I learned from watching and skating with different people,” she said. While in high school, Gigi would often skate with her varsity team, then with the pee wee team coached by her dad, and after a dinner break would round out her evening on the ice with the Warroad Lakers Senior A team. Gigi feels fortunate to have grown up there, where ice time is free, and kids are heavily encouraged to skate as much as possible.

The children of Mike and Connie Marvin, Gigi and her brother Aaron (currently a forward for St. Now a junior forward for the University of Minnesota Women’s hockey team, she recalls her experiences with the Minnesota Selects tournament as some of the most cherished memories of her hockey career. She has enjoyed success in the pee wee ranks, the high school level, on numerous summer tournament teams, and even international competition.
